China+1 — what's actually landed
The "China+1" diversification narrative promised India a large share of relocating manufacturing capacity. Vietnam and Mexico have captured more of that reallocation than India has, for reasons that are more about logistics and regulatory speed than labor cost.
Strategic alignment without full alliance
India's foreign policy posture — deepening ties with the US-led bloc while maintaining independent relationships with Russia and continuing to trade heavily with China — is often read as hedging. It's better understood as a deliberate strategy of maximizing optionality while domestic capacity is still being built.
